Malawi has a 3-8-2-2 formal education structure. There are three years of pre-primary school, which has an official entry age of three and is referred to as pre-primary education. Primary school has an official entry age of six and a duration of eight grades. At the end of the cycle, students receive the Primary School Leaving Certificate (PSLC). Secondary school is divided into two cycles: lower secondary and upper secondary.
Lower secondary, which is known as Junior Secondary (forms 1 and 2), consists of grades 9-10 and culminates in the Junior Certificate (JC); upper secondary, which is known as Senior Secondary (forms 3 and 4), consists of grades 11-12 and culminates in the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) (ISCED 2011 mapping for 2013 school year).
